Over The Waterfall

“Over the Waterfall” is a delightful little D tune, which dances between Ionian and Mixolydian modes. On the mountain dulcimer, that translates to using both the 6 and 6+ frets in the same tune! It appears that the American version of this tune came from the playing of fiddler Henry Reed, but it likely goes back a long ways and several murder ballads share similar melodies. In this class, we’ll learn to flatpick the melody across the strings, and play the entire tune on the melody string with open drones. 1+ fret optional, but can be helpful.
